National Championship College Football 2011, (AP) – Miles expects to meet the Michigan Wolverines head coach vacancy, if the LSU coach said he is “very happy” with his current job.
“It’s hard for me to speculate as to the substance of this meeting,” Miles said Monday while attending the LSU corner Patrick Peterson announced he was turning pro.
“The only thing I can tell you, I spent my day today with a number of underclassmen that I want to come back here,” continued Miles. “I am very happy here. There is a real comfort with my family here in Baton Rouge. I think it’s best left that way and I do not know that there is something more to say. ”
Miles said he was not contacted by anyone from Michigan, his alma mater. He said its representatives had “a very distant conversation” with representatives from Michigan, but had not nailed down when and where a substantive meeting will take place.
Miles is scheduled to travel to Dallas on Tuesday for a commitment it has given voice to rally American Football Coaches Association. This could be the best opportunity to come to a meeting with the interests of Michigan.
Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon was very quiet on the details of his research since firing Rich Rodriguez last week to confirm that Friday, he was using “external resources” to help find a new leader in wins College football program.
“Some suggest that we should end this national search in a matter of hours,” Brandon wrote in his blog posted on mgoblue.com Monday. “But it is a crucial decision for Michigan athletics, and it can not and will not be taken hastily.”
Miles was an offensive lineman team of two Big Ten championships for the late Bo Schembechler, who later gave Miles his first chance to be an assistant coach in 1980. Brandon is a former teammate.
Wednesday, Rich Rodriguez was fired as coach of Michigan with a 15-22 mark in three seasons.
62-17 miles is a 2007 national championship in six seasons at LSU since taking over for Nick Saban in 2005. He comes from a 41-24 victory over Texas AM & the Cotton Bowl to him his fourth season with at least 11 victories the Tigers. It also has a 5-1 record in bowl games at LSU.
LSU contract pays him $ Miles $ 3.75 million per year, runs until 2014 and includes an annual report one year rollover at the discretion of the athletic director who could extend the contract for 2015. The contract also included him among the top three paid college coaches should he win a second national title at LSU.
If Miles were to head back to Michigan, he would be taking on a rebuilding project while leaving behind a program that is linked to a strong favorite in the SEC in 2011.
Next season would be the seventh Miles at LSU. All players will be those he brought to Baton Rouge in a highly rated recruiting class after another.
In addition, Miles signed last month coveted 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior college transfers Zach quarter Mettenberg, a former recruit the best of Georgia was defeated by the Bulldogs because of legal trouble.
Mettenberg arrival is expected to boost the passing game for LSU, the last in the SEC this season, and perhaps the only thing holding back the Tigers in their two losses this season at Auburn and Arkansas.
Mettenberg will compete for snaps with rising senior Jordan Jefferson, who has struggled for long periods, but is coming off an impressive performance in the Cotton Bowl in which he represented four touchdowns.
After Peterson announced he would enter the NFL draft, he said he hopes and believes Miles will remain at LSU, based on his conversations with the coach and what Miles told recruits other underclassmen.
Peterson’s younger brother, Avery Johnson, is a high school standout wide receiver who made an early commitment to LSU.
“I think it is here. He said it is the greatest job in America and I believe him. He is honest with his players and front with us,” said Peterson. “I hope he will return, but he said he is here. … So I can not wait to see the final decision and Avery will be on its way as well.”
