Texas A&M center Matt Allen added an extra duty, if not an extra title, to his job description the day the Aggies learned they would be playing LSU in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.
For the past month, Allen has served as the Aggies' advance scout on LSU-related issues heading into Friday's matchup at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
"Since I played there, everybody's asking me about personnel and any tendencies so we can get an edge on them," said Allen, a senior who spent two seasons at LSU before transferring to A&M in 2008.
What insights has he shared?
"Nothing big," said Allen, who considers Friday's matchup between No. 18 A&M (9-3) and No. 11 LSU (10-2) a "dream game" for his finale as a college football player.
"I couldn't ask for a better way to go out," Allen said. "It's ironic how this all worked out."
The irony extends to the other side of the ball, where LSU defensive tackles Pep Levingston and Drake Nevis are anxious to renew acquaintances -- and to mix it up -- with their former teammate.
Levingston, a fifth-year senior, joined Allen in LSU's 2006 signing class. Nevis, a 2007 signee, also is a senior. Both will be playing their final college games against Allen, a player they have butted heads with before on practice fields in Baton Rouge, La.
Who got the best of those encounters from yesteryear?
"I really can't remember," Levingston said, smiling. "It's been a while ago... Matt is a good, quality guy. We're still friends. But we can be friends after the game. It's strict competition right now."
