GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats and the St. Francis (NY) Terriers will meet this evening in a non-conference tilt, in the consolation match of the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival in New York City.
The Wildcats had their two-game win streak snapped in the opening round of the tournament, as they lost, 65-57, to St. John's. Previously, they had defeated the Citadel, 68-53, on Dec. 4th and then Charlotte, 82-68, on Dec. 11th. The Wildcats fell to 2-2 on neutral courts this season with the loss to St. John's
St. Francis (NY) had won five consecutive games before falling, 92-61, to Northwestern in the opening round on Monday. The matchup was the Terriers' first neutral site game of the year and the team fell to 1-4 in games played away from home.
This is the first-ever meeting between Davidson and St. Francis (NY).
Davidson had a 2010 Holiday Festival championship berth in its sights, but failed to score a point in the final five minutes of regulation in the loss to St. John's. The Wildcats' offensive struggles were not isolated to the closing minutes, as they shot just 34 percent from the floor for the game. They also turned the ball over 21 times. Three players did manage to score in double figures however, as Brendan McKillop scored a team-high 17 points, while Jake Cohen added 14 points and Clint Mann finished with 12. Mann and Cohen also combined for 14 rebounds. McKillop was his usually steady self with the ball in his hands, dishing out four assists against no turnovers. Cohen entered the game as Davidson's leader in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg). J.P Kuhlman had a disappointing night. He entered the game as the Wildcats second- leading scorer (13.6 ppg), but finished with just six points on a paltry 1- of-8 shooting. He also committed six turnovers. A lone bright spot was the Wildcats three point shooting, as they finished with nine made three-pointers (two above their season average) on 39.1 percent shooting. Still, the Wildcats have been a team that finishes strong all year and against St. John's, they were outscored 38-30 in the second half, which ultimately led to their demise.
St. Francis (NY) was utterly dominated by Northwestern on Monday. The Terriers didn't show up on either end of the floor, as they allowed Northwestern to shoot 50.7 percent from the floor, while shooting just 40.7 percent themselves. They also allowed Northwestern to shoot 45.4 percent from beyond the arc. Travis Nichols came off the bench to lead St. Francis (NY) with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Dre Calloway finished with 14 points and Akeem Bennett had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds, but committed an inexcusable eight turnovers. As a team the Terriers had 21 turnovers. It is difficult for the Terriers to win when Bennett struggles. He entered the tournament as the team's leading scorer, averaging 16.3 ppg. Most disappointing, though, was the Terriers' defensive effort, Entering the contest, they were allowing just 61.7 ppg on 42.5 percent shooting.
Neither team performed up to its capabilities on Monday. The Terriers though, were blown out and it is likely they will be primed to avenge that ugly loss.
